Objectives:

Create advocacy content for website and social media accounts.

Present at least two advocacy-related webinars for chapter members.

Develop and publish online a list of timely and vetted advocacy resources for chapter members.
Purpose:

Increase the awareness, visibility, and advocate for the role of the health education specialists and improving health in the communities we serve

Advocate for priority public health issues in disease prevention and health promotion in the DMV area

Create an advocacy toolkit.

Advocate for public health nationally/locally:

Promote awareness of American Medical Association (AMA) Category III health and wellness coaching codes and.

Identify and support public health issues in disease prevention and health promotion in the DMV area.

Support SOPHE’s Advocacy Summit:
-
Recruit participants for the advocacy summit.
-
Apply skills learned during the advocacy summit to advance advocacy efforts in the DMV on timely and critical public health topics.

NCA SOPHE presents an overview of advocacy in the DMV. This session is for anyone who wants to use their voice to support public health.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

Define advocacy and understand the difference between advocacy and lobbying.

Understand the basic structure of VA and MD legislature and DC City Council.

Identify their state representatives.

Understand the legislative process and how to track a bill.

Identify 1 current public health-related bill in VA, MD, and DC.

Identify 3 advocacy resources provided by local and national public health organizations.
